10 Top Tips for Impressive Interview Image |
Dress Code – play safe and adopt business dress, not casual or even smart casual. Exception: if you are told in advance to dress casually, or if you know the working environment is very creative and relaxed.
- Your Interview Outfit - if it is brand new, try sitting in it several times to check for comfort and fit. If it is old, make sure it’s clean, stain free and fits well.
- Hygiene – make sure everything is as clean as it can be. Invest in a haircut, moisturise the skin, visit the dentist, keep nails short and uncoloured. Lick your wrist to check your breath – last night’s curry may still be lingering. Cigarette smoke will always be detected. Shoes – men and women notice them – make sure they are in good condition, clean and polished.
- Hair – men’s facial hair at very least must be clean, neat and groomed. If in any doubt, remove it. Tie long hair back in a ponytail, trim goatee beards, pluck or trim bushy eyebrows and stray nasal/ear hair.
- Scent – good anti-perspirant deodorant plus light spray of perfume/aftershave is enough. Do not be tempted to “top up” five minutes before the interview – you will leave a vapour trail.
- Grooming – for women, makeup makes the difference between “not caring” and looking groomed. It can also hide a multitude of sins e.g. dark circles under the eyes, the inevitable skin breakout when stressed, high colour when nervous. Grooming - for men, skin pampering pre and post shaving is essential.
- Piercings & tattoos – limit exposure as much as possible. Plenty of time to reveal your individuality once you’ve got the job.
- Accessories – no more than 6 items of jewellery (for women), good quality pen & watch. No gimmicky ties or socks please
- Handbags and briefcases – keep to one good quality simple item, to hold essentials such as:-
- two copies of your CV (you’ll impress them with your efficiency)
- your best pen (nothing chewed, leaking or bearing a logo)
- tissues (for “pre-flight” checks)
- a spare pair of tights (for the women)
- your mobile phone (which will be switched off, won’t it!)
- a small notepad for taking notes
- your spectacles
- Develop a good handshake and smile! Practice replying out loud to the question “tell me about yourself” – it’s a gift of a question, but the first time can sound unreal.

Senior Policewoman
"I have prided myself for many years that I do not take hours and hours to get ready to get ready to go to work. However, when you showed your slides of the messy haired, unmade-up face and asked the question – who looks more professional / capable / trustworthy, I had a eureka moment! It clearly has an impact if you take some care over your appearance! This has made a big difference to the way people react to me and to the way I feel prepared for work!"
